Big Ideas

Definiteness of Purpose

” Truly, thoughts are things, and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches, or other material objects.”

― Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

“Every human being who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money wishes for it. Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.”

― Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

What is it that you want? You have to be definite and clear on what you want. It starts with definiteness of purpose then having a burning desire to achieve it. You have control your thoughts. Burning desire plus actions equals success.

Burning desire

Burning desire with definite plan plus persistent and consistent action equals success.

  1. Be specific
  2. What are you going to give in return.
  3. Specific date
  4. Create a definite plan
  5. Write it into a statement
  6. Read statement twice a day

Persistency

“Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them.”

― Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

Become an unstoppable force. Keep on doing and doing. Consistency is the key. Napoleon Hill shared the story of Henry Ford when he gave an instruction to his engineers to develop a V8 engine. First few months, his engineers give up on the idea but Henry Ford never gave up and persistently pursue his idea of V8 engine.

Sexual energy

Here is the hierarchy of the strongest stimulants:

  1. Sex
  2. Love
  3. Desire for riches
  4. Music
  5. Friendship

Transmute the sexual energy into a desire in creative energy and taking action.

Ghosts of fear

These are the six fears that hold people back according to Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich:

Fear of poverty

The number one symptom is indifference towards money and lack of ambition. It can be cured by accepting that whatever you get is enough as long as you give your best.

Fear of Criticism

This fear inhibits you in making decision and taking action. The cure is to accept the reality that no body cares and think about you.

Fear of ill health

It is when you justify laziness with any minor symptoms.

Fear of loss of love ones

One of the common symptom is jealousy. Accept that you yourself is enough. I remember what Iron Man told Spider Man when he took away the high tech suit, “If you are nothing without the suit, then you don’t deserve it.”

Fear of old age

People may stop taking action for they think they are too old. Accept that everybody gets old and start looking on positive outcome of growing old like being wiser.

Fear of death

Habit of thinking of dying. Everybody will die so better accept it and see the beauty of it. Just like what Stoicism tell about loving your fate – “Amor Fati”.

In general, you can conquer all of these fears by just having no attachment and letting go. Accepting what you cant change and loving your fate.
